FPS drop with second wind

I have a problem with FPS dropping suddenly and lagging which gets annoying when I am racing.

I have a similar problem when the game will randomly freeze while driving, then it will "catch up" at high speed and I invariabily end up in the wall if I don't have the reflex to hit the pause key when the game is freezing...

Nope.

I think it has nothing to do with graphics or sounds. I turned them down with no or minimal effect.
Maybe it is linked to AI trying to do things. It seems like it occurs the most on the first laps of a practice session or when I overtake an AI car or when I am overtaken by an AI car

This may sound weird, but just as a thought, try disabling Direct Sound (it is a checkbox in the Sound settings in-game). I had several problems with Second Wind until I disabled that. Now I just get a slightly corrupted looking dashboard sometimes, but that is not too much of a problem.

I tried, but it didn't have any effect. The game still randomly freezes during driving sessions.
