Modern IndyCar mods
#1
As I mentioned in the St. Pete thread, I wanted to turn my attention back to the modern era in light of IndyCar's admission that there are no new IndyCar games under development. I realize some of you are not fans of the new IndyCar. Personally, I don't like some aspects of the current IndyCar series, but I think it would be super cool and get some attention to ICR2 if we can collectively come up with a complete 2024 or 2025 mod for the game (i.e. tracks, cars, anything else possible).

This is the state of the current (2025) IndyCar tracks for ICR2:

Tracks that are already available for ICR2 - perhaps graphical updates may be done
3. Long Beach - current layout is available
6. IMS - available
8. Gateway - available (daytime only?)
9. Road America - available
10. Mid-Ohio - available
13. Toronto - available
14. Laguna Seca - available
15. Portland - available
16. Milwaukee - available
17. Nashville oval - available as night version

Tracks that need more attention
1. St. Pete - we have Wolf_pd's version, could be updated with new SG and graphics
4. Barber - only version exists without objects or AI
7. Detroit (new downtown) - only alpha version available with incomplete graphics and AI

Tracks that need to be built from scratch
2. Thermal Club - no ICR2 version
5. IMS road course - no ICR2 version
11-12. Iowa - no ICR2 version

Cars
We have Noorok's carshape which has liveries up to 2020. Will need to update it to 2024 (or newer) liveries.
However this carshape is incompatible with ICR2 Rendition so there could be a separate project to adapt it to work on Rendition.

Rendition compatibility
Ensuring all the tracks/cars are compatible with Rendition ICR2 is potentially a huge project. We should discuss as a community if it is worth spending the effort to make tracks and cars work in Rendition, or if that same time and effort should be used to actually create new tracks and cars.

Other possible mods
Update menu screens
Update sounds
Update cockpit perhaps using my analog dashboard tool to make the Cosworth steering wheel instead

We can use this thread to volunteer to help with anything above, and to post progress and questions about these.

To add,
1. there is a Pavel made sg around for St Pete.
4. Barber was done in GPL, which has a much different way working with their trk base. I think elevation wise it is quite good, but the file hasn't been build properly for ICR2 looking at how the turns are made (very short sections).
11-12. There is a relatively decent sg around for Iowa in N3 and there are even some base buildings made.

What is the incompatibility with rendition for Noorok's carshape?

Considering the game is 30 years old next, it would be a nice way to honour the game this way.

Thanks @Wolf_pd
Pavel said he will share his SG for St. Pete when he is able to.

Will you help us convert the Barber GPL TRK to an ICR2 TRK or SG? And where can I find the N3 Iowa?

So far, I am finding that carsets with mip or mi4 files of 128px width will work on Rendition. For example, the default carset and CART2k. Some of the other carsets, including Noorok's DW12 carshape uses 256px wide textures which cause errors when loading in Rendition. I believe the best solution is to create a new mip template of 128px wide (and we should be able to make it as tall as needed, subject to any memory limitations). And then of course we need to get into the 3do files and remap the textures but that should just be a one-time exercise for each carshape.

Loaded Pavel's SG and did a little bit of work - rotated the track so that North is up, and then aligned the sections to match an aerial photo. I do this to make it easier to put trackside objects in their exact spots by converting latitude/longitude to Papy units.

Fortunately I was able to retain most of Pavel's SFE work so I think we're off to a good start here.

I will look up the N3 Iowa files I have (will have to make a note of it, memory is messy).
I can share the Barber files as well, but they will need work.

Here's a rough version of the new track for 2026 at Arlington, TX. I got excited about the track, so did this one quickly. No AI - preseason testing only.

Wow- there is nothing "quick" about that. It would take a lot of work to even get that far. Your structures are huge! Very talented work.

I had St. Pete all set up so it was just copying the project over to do this one. The stadium is lifted from Vancouver and baseball stadium from Toronto. So besides the hotel, I didn't do much here!
