Riverside track project
#1
Hi,
Below you can find my files for Riverside track I've started long time ago.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1...drive_link

There are two archives: one 'ope' for building files, second 'icr2' for icr2 track folder. I post this folders as I have them currently.
Basic layout is ready, palette and basic textures are ready. I've started to work on on some outfield 3dos. I think most of the hills are ready.
Samsepi0l, you can check files. If you can help me finish this project I will be very happy Smiley

I would be happy to help with whatever I can! Samsepi0l - I assume you are taking the lead on this one, just let me know if you need anything.

Thank you. I downloaded the files and I took a look at it. The track looks fantastic so far. I need to watch some video footage of the 1982 race to get some good ideas of which TSOs would be needed but this will save so much time.

I am trying to acclimate myself to your files and folders and the way things are organized.

In my previous track projects I have created a "working directory" where I keep everything prepared for N3 format so I can use it in OPE.

I make my SG file here and keep all of my executables in it where I can use them with dosbox from the dos prompt.

First I make the SG file with SGE, then I use SFE and get the section widths.  After I get a good SG file I run SG2TRK, then TRK23D, then 3D23DO.

To get it to work in OPE I add the necessary files (a pallet, a sky and horizon 3do, road texture mips, the basics) and then I start working on the 3D files, creating objects.

I do mostly everything in OPE and N3 format in my working folder because I like being able to view things in OPE.  Once I am ready I will copy the 3D files to another folder that I call "noorok" where I have his python tools to make my 3do's for actual ICR2.  Then I build the track for icr2 piece by piece.  Obviously I have to make all the necessary files.

Here you have multiple SG files, and I think the "final" one is the one I circled right?  I see it is the newest.  I just wanted to make sure this is the one you used to run sg2trk, trk23d, and 3d23do.

Yes, that should be final sg file. Other sg files are progress backups Smiley
Because I run this tools under WinXp I don't need DosBox. Somy working folder may look bit different than what is required fro DosBox.
Also I never used OPE and N3 to check track progress. Simply because I didn't want to spent time creating N3 mips. I tested everything in ICR2.

That's smart you keep so many backups.

Interesting.... that's strange when I make my mips for OPE, I simply copy them to ICR2 directly from my working folder and they have always worked fine. It was just the 3DOs made from 3d23do in dosbox that wouldn't work for me (that's why I use the noorok converter tools for python 3d23do)

Starting with Detroit, I think I spent less time looking at OPE since it was easy enough to keep my ICR2 track updated. I have a replay file that is just a lap around the circuit, so I can quickly move forward and back through the track, to the view the parts I need.

Yeah but I think OPE makes it really easy and convenient to test your drawing order. Plus having it in flight mode makes it great if you want to get on any side of the drawing surface. Everybody does things a little different and I have been slowly moving more towards your method but I still don't want to give up my love for OPE

Pavel - I think I understand your previous comment about making "OPE" mips now... I looked at your stuff more closely today. When I opened the track in OPE today I saw that the font and some of the graphics looked purple instead of brown like I have always seen before- then I opened the OPE sunny.pcx in GIMP and I see this is a different pallet style organized differently (n3 style probably). It looks like you take the same colors and then re-organize the pallet in icr2 format and make a different sunny.pcx for icr2. Doing it this way you get all the same colors but they have different index numbers...so it makes more sense now.

What I've always done (maybe just because I don't know better) is I create one sunny.pcx that is shared between icr2 and OPE. This way all my mips are interchangeable.

I was amazed when I drove around in OPE since the elevations, hills and textures all look great. Really it just needs TSO, TSD and MRK.

There is something that I am dealing with at work that is sucking up some of my time right now so I can't spend as much as I want to working on this but we should really be able to get a fantastic result here.

Samsepi0l and I discussed that we'll divide up the work on this Riverside project (I will focus on TSOs for now). Spent some time understanding Pavel's progress so far and getting workspace organized. Some of the housekeeping tasks included getting the .SG file to load in SGE and SFE, and then confirming that the ICR2 .3DO can be regenerated using nooRok's converter.  Did some "quality of life" adjustments such as applying the correct colors to the asphalt, dirt, grass and walls.

Noting the complexity of the track, especially around the 2 big grandstands after the esses, shortens draw distance. I'd like to find a way so that the whole section isn't just popping into view when you get close, i.e. it should be visible from farther back. The hills in front of the 2 big grandstands will need some work - right now there is a big space under the stands as you approach.

I think the palette is good, so no changes there. The elevation changes feel a bit dramatic in some places, but I am no expert on this track having never driven it on any other sim. I assume Pavel did enough homework to make the elevations accurate?
