Best method for getting ICR2 working (Win 10)
#1
What is the current best method of getting ICR2 working on modern machines. I have a DOSBox setup but also see that the graphics are considerably better on a Windows 95/98 VM Machine but cannot get the game to accept my controller on VM while in DOSBox it is happy.

How are others getting through this?

Another possibility - that I haven't tried yet so I can't vouch for it - is PCem, which is a hardware emulator that should let you simulate an old pc and then load 95/98 and icr2.

What dosbox type and version are you using, and have you tuned the graphic settings in the config file? My dosbox ECE icr2 looks every bit as fancy as it did on my oldschool real dos pc's back in the day.

Check out GPLaps' video on how to get the game running on a modern system: https://www.icr2.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=1411
Besides that, there is also a forum thread about optimizing the graphics for the Windows version of ICR2: https://www.icr2.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=1381

Agree with samsepi0l if you get Dosbox set up well (for me, it's making sure the aspect ratio is in line with 640x480 and that anti-alias is off) then graphically there should be no difference from a real DOS PC.

The Windows version of ICR2 (Windy) performs better (i.e. higher frame rate) with complex tracks and carsets, probably because it has access to more memory or computing power. But some folks report that Windy has bugs that the DOS version doesn't have.

I am able to use Windy.exe directly in Windows 10 by changing the settings on its compatibility tab.

I posted a screenshot in a previous thread:

I've used these settings on XP & Win7 machines, and they still work (for me) on my Windows 10 PCs.

Let me know if these work for you!

I run on Windows 7 with these exact same settings. When i had XP on my machine i could run with Direct Draw, even if you put de DLL files from the wrapper into ICR2 folder, direct draw mode will have it`s colors all messed up if you run anything up Windows XP. Its strange because Jane`s longbow 2 runs ok as well as other sims, just ICR2 does not accept it.
