Denver 90/91 build thread

I found a map of the 90/91 Denver track that fits almost identically over the google maps "put together" I did.  I can see where I'm going to have a problem with the sections being too close.  (Turns 7 and 12).

For SG build purposes, I'm going to go with the track vector map that I downloaded since it is so good.

   

The pit lane does NOT have the S/F line pass through it.... that should not matter right?

Looking forward to following this project! I'm getting close to a stopping point with Nashville and probably will shift to Detroit next (as time permits), but I would be happy to help with anything on this Denver project.

For Turns 7 and 12, let's see how close you can get without the warp issue. I don't know if you want to go through all the trouble of moving the centerline off center like I did with Nashville!

I have to say that I don't have much experience with SGE, since I took an existing trackshape and basically just fixed a few parts with Tamiami, and Sanair was almost an exact copy of the SGE shape.

Is it better to make all of the straights first, and then connect them with corners, or should I work in 1 direction?  I'm having problems getting the straights to match perfectly because if I make the previous corner tighter (or looser) it overshoots the angle either way....

I think it might be better in the initial placement to go in one direction along the track. Zooming in may also give you more precision. But inevitably you are going to have to make adjustments, so you'll want to be familiar with the process of moving points, and in many cases you will want to disconnect segments from each other before moving them.

The strange thing was I completed my basic trackshape in SGE, and it showed the length over 12 miles long! I used the scale function so it matches 1.95 miles (which is what I measured on google maps). My PCX obviously does not line up now although I think this is OK because I should not need it for track shape any longer - right?

You shouldn't need your PCX at this point. However this is where I prefer having my PCX scaled appropriately in SGE/SFE (as I describe in this post) so that I can keep having it as a reference. I imagine you would also want that if you were doing a road course with more runoff so that you can try to place your walls exactly where it shows in the PCX.

Thanks - I don't know why my PCX was not scaled exactly because I thought I did it exactly as you described.

There are so many buildings at Denver that I wonder if it may be a good idea to learn how to make 3DO buildings by some other method. I have always been under the assumption that Pavel and nooRok use some sort of 3D CAD software. I have been using freecad for linux for my 3d printing, so I think I may be able to pick it up fast. This may be something that will help us with Detroit in the future as well.

I saw something about Blender on nooRok's website but I haven't researched it enough.

I do think Denver is the most urban track we have. I mean it is right smack in the middle of every type of building. Detroit is probably only harder because there are more different types of objects (tunnel, and monorail)

I believe nooRok used Blender to make the new carshape, and Pavel uses the old school method of manually coding the .3D file at least for track objects. I have done a minor step up from coding manually and I use a Google Sheet with formulas and stuff, but that's still a lot more work than using a proper CAD tool.

I can see Blender being the future of how we do things, given how powerful the tool is and that it is free. nooRok's 3DO tools for Blender have been out there for a while, but I don't know what they can do either.

Sorry my directions for the PCX didn't quite work - I'll try to revisit what I wrote at some point.

The PCX didn't work, because I am a moron and I forgot to take the "comment" signs out from in front of the INI file.

I'm sorry! I'm trying it again with the "comment" marks removed now. I assume it will work right.

checkpoint10- can you look at this SG and tell me if you think it will give me any problems?  I think I broke up all of the corner segments into sections that are less than 90 degrees.  As far as the shape of the track goes- I'm pretty happy with it being centered in my PCX file.
