This is the building in question and the complexity is in the stepped roof of the building, which is clearly visible from far away. I am wondering however if I could shortcut this by creating it as a simple box and using the texture to "paint" the sky on the side of the building. It might work if I can kind of match the sky texture at that part. I don't think any building will show up behind it, so that also helps.

Thanks for offering to help - I think even bouncing ideas off each other is helpful.

oh wow- me too... denver has a bunch of those.  2 of which do not exist any more (so I can't use google maps)  My best view of these is a 1 minute clip where michael andretti had a flat tire and drove around for a full lap slowly with it.  They kept that lap mostly on his in-car camera so I can see things at a slow pace.

What I would consider also, is use a linearly sloped roof.  Polygons do not need to be right angles at all sides.  You can make one face sorta trapezoid shaped.

I have a few spots where I cut corners and made things flat where they really weren't.  It does not brake my heart because the tracks in the original game did that all of the time.

I would also prefer this solution, and make the steps in the MIP with right places single pixels.
Making it rectangular can look OK, but you have to match the sky texture exactly, and it can only work from a frontal view. If the left side of the building gets visible, it would look bad.

That's a tough one given it's right next to the track. But you're right, no one would likely care about these details for a building they barely see.

Thanks for all the advice on that building. I might be lucky in that the stepped roof is only viewable from a certain angle (to the right of the building) and from far away, so I may be able to apply the shortcuts without it being noticed. By the time you get anywhere close to the building, the top half of the building should not be visible because it's too close, so it's actually the bottom of the building and the tunnel that I should pay attention to.
If you have time to look at the rooftop detail, are you still in the race?

On a similar note, I've been wondering whether to bother with the back side of the building, it is not visible from TV cameras or driving normally on the track, only if you have spun out on the back straightaway or driving in the wrong direction.

hahahahahhahhh you almost made me spill my coffee!

I haven't used any textures either on stuff you would only see in the rearview mirrror- heck my buildings don't even have roof's now (you better bring an umbrella if it rains)
Ultimately decided it was easier to roll up my sleeves and create the building, stepped roof and all. You can see a few other new buildings I created recently too.
